KWA was registered on 9th March, 2006 and it took over the activities of its precursor Kerarapon Water Project (KWP) which had earlier been registered in 1998 upon handing over by the Government of Kenya the full responsibility of running the provision of water by and to, the Kerarapon Community.
The source of water is the Kerarapon Springs located within Kerarapon about 8km on the northern lower reaches of Ngong Hills. Before 1980’s, there were very few family’s residents in Kerarapon and with a few of them using water connections from the then Nairobi City Council. A diesel engine powered pump belonging to Olkejuado County Council used to pump water from the Springs to Kibiko (Animals) Holding Grounds.
With arrival of more residents in Kerarapon the Government was petitioned for help through the then area Member of Parliament to help supply piped water to the households. In response to the petition the government built a pump house, a water tank (high up) in Empakasi Forest and supplied water pipes. The then residents supplied labour for trench excavation and laying of the pipes.
The first pumped water to homes became available towards the end of 1991. For residents who had been used to fetching water in jerrycans a new era dawned: from that point on the history of KWA is traced.
The last 30 years has seen the population of Kerarapon grow to over 800 households from (about) 50 in 1991. The supply aqueducts and equipments have had to be changed and re-modelled to cater for the growing population.
